‘The pressure of new technologies to emerge faster due to people becoming more dedicated to their reading devices as eBooks meant that traditional print publishing has declined more rapidly’ (Hawkins, D, 2014). Students are the main market for e-books at this current time. ‘A recent survey showed that 62% of students would prefer using their textbooks in electronic form to save carrying a load of heavy books with them’ (Brady, M, 2013).Reading digitally has many benefits, a few being: interactivity, higher reader engagement, readership feedback and advertisement flexibility.
‘In November 2013, statistics showed that adult e-book sales were up by just 4.8 per cent in 12 months, while hardcover book sales had risen by 11.5 per cent’ (Furness, H, 2014) also nearly 70% of consumers feel it is unlikely that they will give up on printed books by 2016 and despite their perceived popularity, 60% of eBooks downloaded are never even read’ (Price, G, 2013).
